This programme consists entirely of courses in pure and applied Mathematics. You take courses in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics in each year. The course is quite demanding, and you must have at least a grade B1 in higher Leaving Certificate Mathematics to undertake it. A natural follow-on is the one-year MSc by coursework.

Year 1:

MT231P, MT241P, MT242P, MT243P, MT232P, MT234P (each 5 credits) + Mathematical Physics modules.

Year 2:

MT331P, MT332P, MT333P, MT341P, MT342P, MT344P (5 credits) + Mathematical Physics modules.

Year 3:

(30 credits)

Compulsory modules: MT433P, MT434P, MT441P, MT451P (5 credits each)

Optional modules: Either MT511 (10 credits) or any two of the other modules on offer this year: MT442P, MT444P, MT461S, MT462S, MT463S, MT464S, MT465S, MT466S and MT480C (5 credits each).

+ Mathematical Physics modules

A grade B1 or better in Higher Leaving Mathematics is required.

BSc (Single Honours) Pure Mathematics

Year 1:

Mathematics (MT101S, MT102S, MT111S, MT122S) + three other Science subjects.

Year 2:

Mathematics (MT201S, MT202S (or MT236S ), MT211S, MT222S) + two other Science subjects.

Year 3:

Pure Mathematics: (MT331P, MT332P, MT333P, MT341P, MT342P, MT344P) + one other Science subject.

Year 4:

Compulsory modules: MT433P, MT434P, MT441P, MT451P (5 credits each)

Optional modules: Either eight of the following modules, or MT511 (10 credits) and six of these modules: MT442P, MT444P, MT461S, MT462S, MT463S, MT464S, MT465S, MT466S and MT480C (5 credits each).

This is the route to follow if you would like to take two or three years of formal courses in another Science subject on the way to your Mathematics degree. Students who propose to continue to research usually carry on to the one-year M.Sc. course in Mathematics.

BSc (Double Honours) Pure Mathematics + X (where X is not Statistics)

Pure Mathematics and a second Science subject. The other subjects that are available are Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematical Physics and Experimental Physics.

Year 1:

Mathematics (MT201S, MT202S (or MT236S ), MT211S, MT222S) + two other Science subjects.

Entry requirements:

Admission to Third Year Applied Mathematics is open to all who pass the Second Science Examination with a pass mark in Mathematics but the Single-Honours option in Year 4 is subject to restrictions - see the marks thresholds page for details.

This degree is feasible for students with a good result (A2 or better) in Ordinary Leaving Certificate Mathematics.

Subject to permission, students may substitute some courses in Mathematical Physics for some of the above.
