Course overview:
The programme is aimed primarily at teachers of Mathematics at second level who may not have Mathematics to degree level. Applications are also welcome from prospective second level teachers and other professionals in the second level education community.
Entry requirements:
Candidates should have a good primary degree and ideally have some experience of teaching Mathematics.
Course details:
The course will be part-time and will run over two years. Two thirds of the course will consist of Mathematics and one third will be Mathematics Education.
| The Mathematics component of the course will be delivered by the Mathematics Department of NUI Maynooth. The Mathematics modules aim to improve the skill set of Mathematics teachers by deepening their understanding of Mathematics, especially the Mathematics underlying the second level curriculum. Topics will include: Number Theory, the History of Mathematics, Problem Solving and Proof, Geometry, Probability and Statistics, Algebra, and Analysis. Attention will be paid in each module to the ways in which these topics could be used to enrich the teaching of Mathematics at second level. | ![]() |

The Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge , supported by staff of St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra, will deliver the Mathematical Education component. These modules will introduce students to the latest research in this field and will draw on the students' experience as teachers. |
Course Timetable
The Mathematics modules will be delivered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm to 7pm in MS2, Top Floor, Logic House, South Campus, NUI Maynooth.
Mathematics tutorials will take place on Tuesdays from 7-8pm in MS2 also.
The Education modules will be delivered in 5 weekend blocks over the two-year period. These will take place at NUI Maynooth on Fridays (all day) and Saturdays (morning only) during school holiday periods. In addition there will be one midweek block in Cambridge during the Summer 2012. There will also be three Mathematics Education tutorials each year. These tutorials will take place on Saturday mornings at NUI Maynooth.

Assessment:
Assessment for the Mathematics modules will consist of a mixture of continuous assessment and end of semester examinations. The Mathematics Education component will be assessed by essay.
Fees:
Course fees will be 3500 euro per year. A tuition bursary may be awarded to one highly qualified candidate.
These fees are subject to annual review.
